A large number of SLFP MPs and provincial and local councillors attended a rally yesterday (26) at the Seevali grounds, Ratnapura, calling on the United People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA) and Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) to nominate Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa as the prime ministerial candidate at the next general election. Approximately 27 SLFP MPs attended the rally.


Altogether 29 MPs, excluding Wimal Weerawansa, Dinesh Gunawardena and Vasudeva Nanayakkara, attended the rally to bring back Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa as the United People's Freedom Alliance prime ministerial candidate.


National Freedom Front Leader Wimal Weerawansa said that 68 MPs would be in attendance at the next rally.


Parliamentarians Kumara Welgama, Bandula Gunawardena, Mahindananda Aluthgamage, Rohitha Abeygunawardena, Manusha Nanayakkara, Gamini Lokuge, Ranjith Zoysa, Roshan Ranasinghe, S.M. Chandrasena, Janaka Wakkumbura, Salinda Dissanayake, Dilum Amunugama, Janaka Priyantha Bandara, Shriyani Wijewickrema, Sunny Rohana Kodithuwakku, Lohan Ratwatte, S.E. Muthukumara, Shehan Semasinghe, Y.G. Padmasiri, T.B. Ekanayake, Uditha Lokubandara, Chamika Buddhadasa, Vidura Wickremanayake, Kamala Ranatunga, Dr. Rohana Pushpakumara, B.K. Indika, Weerakumara Dissanayake, Geethanjana Gunawardena and Thenuka Vidanagamage were in attendance.


The rally was organized by the Pivithuru Hela Urumaya led by its General Secretary Western Provincial Councillor Udaya Gammanpila, Mahajana Eksath Peramuna Leader Dinesh Gunawardena, Democratic Left Front Leader Vasudeva Nanayakkara and the NFF. Western Provincial Councillor Prasanna Ranatunga also attended the rally.


About 300 SLFP provincial and local councillors arrived with Ranatunga in addition to the provincial and local councillors from the North Central and Southern provincial councils who also joined the rally.
